The much dreaded sore throat and cold season has arrived and it’s almost impossible to avoid picking something up.

As a child, I would get Bronchitis every winter and have the most disturbing bark for weeks on end.

In the last few years, I rarely get colds and personally attribute it to making healthy food choices and adding fermented foods to my diet that help build my immune system.

My friend Carol often speaks about how her and her family swear by 100% pure Welch’s concord grape juice when they have sore throats and colds.

I personally like to warm it up and sip on it.

It’s so soothing and comforting.

What are the benefits of concord grapes?

Concord grapes have been shown to increase the production of the cells in our body that fight off disease and foreign invaders. Boosting these natural killer cells and T-cells will help keep your immune system in tip-top shape during cold and flu season.

The small but powerful purple fruit is bursting with antioxidants, polyphenols and vitamin C.

Concord grapes also help keep your brain sharp.

Many degenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, begin with the accumulation of certain proteins and foreign bodies in the brain. Concord grapes have been shown to prevent the accumulation of these potentially harmful substances. This helps keep your nervous system healthy.

Water kefir blends beautifully with concord grapes and is ultra simple to make.

Last week Happy Gut customer Karyn sent me a message that said, “Today I made a batch of water kefir with my homemade grape juice. It turned out fantastic!!”

That message inspired me to go outside and pick some concord grapes and make some fresh grape juice.

I personally like to mash a 1/2  cup of concord grapes with skins, seeds and all into a bowl and pour it in with my Happy Gut swivel top bottle  with my first ferment . I seal up the bottle and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours and the water kefir eats up the natural sugars from the grapes and makes a delicious immune boosting grape soda.

An even simpler way to make the grape soda is to purchase 100% pure concord grape juice. My favorite brand is Welch’s because it has no added sugar. Add 1/4 cup to your first ferment water kefir, clasp the lid and place it in the warmest spot in your house for 24 hours.

Open slowly and ENJOY!

Your body will reap the benefits of 30 billion probiotics, enzymes, electrolytes, B12 B6 B1, magnesium, folate, vitamin C, polyphenols and antioxidants.
