Apple picking season is upon us and fresh pressed apple juice takes me back to a time when my family would have apple juice pressing parties at our house. It was a yearly highlight for us kids! My dad was a carpenter and built an apple press. Friends and relatives would arrive with truck loads of boxes of apples and they would spend the day running the apple press. Mom would seal it into giant mason jars and we would drink it all winter. I enjoyed the apple juice but I also took it for granted. As a kid being raised on a self sufficient farm drinking fresh cows milk and eating eggs from the hen house, my mission in life was to get my mother to buy Grape Kool Aid.

Forty years later, fresh pressed apple juice is almost like a delicacy. We are very fortunate to live in an area where fresh pressed apple juice is produced and have it at our fingertips all year long.

Did you know that apples are the top fruit for natural energy boosting?

Do you find yourself needing some sort of pick me up on a daily basis and hate turning to dehydrating energy drinks and coffee to keep your mind and motor running?

The reality is, you don’t need expensive supplements or drinks for energy.

Let me introduce you to the perfect alternative.

Water kefir and fresh pressed apple juice soda.

Apples are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, and also have good carbohydrates – everything your body needs for a quick energy boost. Water kefir is brimming with electrolytes to give you the added get up and go!

Here’s what happens when you drink fresh pressed apple juice: The carbohydrates break down into a sugar called glucose and enter your bloodstream (where they are termed “blood sugar”). That sugar travels to your cells, where it’s turned into energy for your body.

But here’s the key: Some kinds of carbs (like white bread and candy) break down fast, moving quickly from your bloodstream to your cells. That’s called a blood sugar “crash”, and it feels lousy, leaving you drained and even hungry. The key is to have carbs that break down more slowly, so you’ll have a more stable blood sugar and won’t feel those spikes and dips that can wreak havoc on your energy levels and your appetite.

Water kefir with apple juice as the base fits that bill. It ranks low on what’s called the Glycemic Index (GI), which is a measure of how quickly foods raise your blood sugar. And while the apple water kefir soda may not replace your regular coffee routine all  together, it offers a healthier alternative to staying awake.

So the  next time you’re feeling a little tired or need an extra pick-me-up,  pass on the coffee and drink an apple juice based water kefir soda.
