Today Team Happy Gut shares how fermented water kefir, coconut water, and watermelon can ease bloating and dehydration!
Well summer is in full swing! This heat wave has left us thirsty! Hydration is key in this hot weather, as well as a good balance of electrolytes to keep us healthy and energized. And for those with chronic medical conditions, pregnancy or a sensitivity to heat all understand the perils of swelling and edema in these warm summer months. This week we will touch on how to ease these troublesome symptoms with the help of water kefir!
According to research, live probiotics not only reduce stomach bloating, but can also help to reduce overall inflammation and water retention (edema) when taken regularly. Live probiotics also improve digestion, which means bodies with healthy gut flora have an easier time with absorption. Not only is this great for vitamins and nutrients in general, but also those that we need to stay hydrated and keep our electrolytes in balance. Thanks to water kefir, getting a healthy dose of live probiotics is easier than ever. Did you know that just 1-2 ounces of water kefir has the same amount of probiotics as an entire tub of yogurt?
Pro Tip: along with daily water kefir, drinking plenty of water, limiting high energy activities in direct heat, and taking heat breaks are all essential to avoid dehydration. If you are prone to swollen limbs in the heat, staying cool, and keeping those extremities elevated will also help reduce symptoms.
Low in calories and rich in potassium, coconut water is not only a wonderful tool to stay hydrated but it is also a delicious way to help reduce bloating and swelling/edema in hot weather. It contains less sugar and sodium than sports drinks but is significantly higher in potassium making it a delicious solution. Coconut water also helps restore blood sugar levels more quickly than sports drinks. When purchasing coconut water, ensure it is 100% pure coconut water and has no added sugar. Who knew that this scrumptious elixir also had so many health benefits?
Fermenting Coconut water is ultra easy!
Add 4 cups of pure coconut water to your brewing jar and stir in 1/4 cup Happy Gut Water Kefir Grains. Place in a warm spot for 24 hours. The water kefir grains will eat up all of the natural sugars in the coconut water and produce a live probiotic, electrolyte rich, low sugar drink that can be added to smoothies or placed into a second ferment where flavoring is added and fizz is produced. When a fruit has water in its name, you know that it is a great choice to help you stay hydrated! Watermelon is over 90% water, and is abundant in lycopene which gives it the deep red color and also protects our cells from sun damage, and improves complexion. It is also high in antioxidants and is full of vitamins and minerals to help fight inflammation.
Other fruits and veg we love to help us hydrate: cucumber, spinach or lettuce, and strawberries all contain over 90% water, along with other incredible vitamins and minerals. Perfect additions to a summer smoothie!
