Let’s get your ‘Plum’ ing movin’.
Happy Gut is located on a farm in the beautiful West Kootenay’s with an abundance of fruit trees that produce prolific amounts of fruit.
Fall is such a great time to experiment!
This week I chose plum as our brew of the week.
I was recently contacted by a patient literally from her hospital bed. She was referred to Happy Gut by one of the nurses. She had been in the hospital for over 20 days suffering from constipation and needed some extra natural support.

Bowel movements reflect our overall digestive health and are indicators that our diet, exercise routine, stress levels, and water intake are at healthy levels. Links have been made between proper digestive functioning and disease prevention.
Water Kefir can increases your “good” gut bacteria and is beneficial in four major ways:
- Suppresses the growth of pathogenic (bad) bacteria
- Improves the barrier function of the intestinal lining
- Modulates the intestinal immune system
- Reduces pain
When you first drink water kefir, a loose stool typically occurs because the bad bacteria in your system is being flushed out and your gut is being repopulated with good bacteria.
It is suggested that you start with 1/2 cup per day and slowly increase your intake.
Once the good bacteria is repopulated, your system begins to run regularly again.
It can take up to 2 weeks for your system to adjust.
Plums are an excellent natural choice for helping to get things movin’.
Plums and Prunes are the same fruit, one is just dehydrated.
Prunes are more concentrated in flavor and sugar content, so fewer are needed to achieve a deep flavor.
They are packed with antioxidants and vitamin C.
Adding them to your second ferment water kefir makes a very tasty soda but also works as a gentle laxative.

I personally like to cut up a 1/2 cup of fresh plums chopped finely and add them to my Happy Gut swivel top bottle with my first ferment . You can substitute the fresh plums for 1/4 cup of prune juice or 3 tablespoons of dried prunes. Add 1/2 tsp vanilla and 2 sprigs of Thyme.
Seal up the bottle and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours.
The water kefir eats up the natural sugars from the plums and makes a delicious, gentle, bowel movin’ soda.
