In my world, January means citrus season and our fruit bowl is always brimming with giant juicy oranges and grapefruits.
It was an interesting photo shoot this week when two distinct worlds collided.
A beautiful snowy Canadian day with juicy Californian sunshine pink grapefruit.
The best of both worlds.
(The white spots on the leaves are genuinely snowflakes that were falling 🙂
Many of you have started healthy eating plans this week and I wanted to share the benefits of introducing more citrus into your diet.
There is actually some very interesting science backed information about the correlation of eating grapefruit and how it aids in weight loss.
What can a grapefruit do for you?
Grapefruit contains Naringenin, a flavonoid that balances out blood sugar levels and helps to prevent metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetic condition associated with weight gain around the waist. Scientists say that it works by programming the liver to burn up excess fat, rather than store it.
It is a nutrient-dense superfood, that is rich in vitamin C and it provides more than 100 percent of daily vitamin C requirements.
Eventhough grapefruit juice has weight loss benefits — and contains nutrients that support weight loss — it’s not a guaranteed weight loss cure that will compensate for a poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle.
You still have to get off your butt and get moving. 🙁

One of my favorite parts of owning Happy Gut is when people message me and tell me about their flavor combinations they made and how incredibly tasty they turned out.
Many clients have told me that grapefruit water kefir is their all time favorite recipe.
Since it’s citrus month, why not give this combination a try and let me know how you like it.
The sage adds just a little extra dimension to the drink but it’s optional.

Leeza Zurwick is the Founder of Happy Gut and has a deep passion for living off the earth and using fermented food as medicine. After being gifted some water kefir grains, she found it difficult to find consistent information on how to brew water kefir and she found it challenging to source the right brewing supplies. Through extensive research, trial and error, Leeza developed simple recipes and systems to ensure success and delicious results. After drinking water kefir daily, she noticed a significant reduction in bloating, clearer skin and her immune system was strengthened enough to not get sick, despite working in classrooms full of germy kids! Leeza launched Happy Gut in 2017 and made it her mission to share the age old wisdom, simplicity and incredible health benefits of live, probiotic rich, fermented Water Kefir.
