In my world, January means citrus season and our fruit bowl is always brimming with giant juicy oranges and grapefruits.

It was an interesting photo shoot this week when two distinct worlds collided.

Many of you have started healthy eating plans this week and I wanted to share the benefits of introducing more citrus into your diet.

There is actually some very interesting science backed information about the correlation of eating grapefruit and how it aids in weight loss. 

What can a grapefruit do for you?

Grapefruit contains Naringenin, a flavonoid that balances out blood sugar levels and helps to prevent metabolic syndrome, a pre-diabetic condition associated with weight gain around the waist. Scientists say that it works by programming the liver to burn up excess fat, rather than store it.

It is a nutrient-dense superfood, that is rich in vitamin C and it provides more than 100 percent of daily vitamin C requirements.

Eventhough grapefruit juice has weight loss benefits — and contains nutrients that support weight loss — it’s not a guaranteed weight loss cure that will compensate for a poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle.

Ahh… reality.

You still have to get off your butt and get moving. ūüôĀ

One of my favorite parts of owning Happy Gut is when people message me and tell me about their flavor combinations they made and how incredibly tasty they turned out.

Many clients have told me that grapefruit water kefir is their all time favorite recipe.

Since it’s citrus month, why not give this combination a try and let me know how you like it.

The sage adds just a little extra dimension to the drink but it’s optional.



Make the first ferment and leave the jar in a warm place for 24-48 hours.

Strain the grains and add the following to your second ferment. 

1/4 cup fresh squeezed grapefruit or unsweetened grapefruit juice or 2 drops food grade essential oil

5 leaves fresh sage

Seal up the green swivel top bottle and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours for the second ferment.

Open slowly. 

Strain and enjoy!
