As November blows cold into our lives, so does the winter darkness and the anxiety of Christmas creeping up on us.

Stress around all of those issues is real but there are natural ways to help ease those feelings.

Looking at probiotics and mood disorders, studies have shown that beneficial microorganisms decrease inflammation and increase GABA, the neurotransmitter that anti-anxiety medications aim to mimic.

When we eat or drink fermented foods, our own body is increasing this neurotransmitter that reduces anxiety.

The connection between probiotics and mood disorders is very interesting.

It’s not all in your head!

The key to wrestling your worries may actually be in your gut.

People who eat more fermented foods are less likely to experience anxiety.

Thanks to their probiotic power, fermented foods boost the population of beneficial bacteria in your gut and flush out bad bacteria.

It’s this favorable change to your gut that in turn influences anxiety.

Scientists have long known your microbe makeup has a profound effect on your health, which is why your gut is often referred to as your second brain.

You need to mix it up.

Studies show that those who eat and drink the most yogurt, milk kefir, fermented nut and soy milk, miso soup, sauerkraut, pickles, tempeh, water kefir, kombucha and kimchi have lower levels of anxiety.

Having a variation of these fermented foods regularly can help supplement medications and therapy but always be cognizant of the sugar content and ensure that you are buying a live product.

Yogurt is not beneficial to your gut if it is full of sugar.

Water Kefir is a fermented beverage that is brimming with over 30 billion live probiotics, can be made within 48 hours and is surprisingly tasty!

Here is a simple recipe that boasts anxiety reducing magnesium, B1,B6,B12, enzymes, folate, vitamin K, calming vitamin A from the Chamomile and immune boosting Vitamin C and antioxidants in the blueberries.

Anxiety Taming Blueberry Chamomile Water Kefir Soda

1/4 cup of lightly mashed blueberries

1 Tbsp loose Chamomile tea

Add to your Happy Gut swivel top bottle with your first ferment.

*ginger is also a nice addition*

Seal up the bottle and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours for the second ferment.

The water kefir eats up the natural sugars from the blueberries and makes a subtle but delicious, anxiety taming soda which is perfect to drink throughout the day!
