I must say, living in Canada, hibiscus is very foreign to us.
Some people grow them as tropical house plants and may get a bloom or two but for the most part, people have no idea what it even is.
Hibiscus is popping up more readily these days in various drinks and it made me wonder what is all the hype about.
Turns out that hibiscus should always be in your repertoire of teas in your cupboard and is regarded as highly as Matcha and Yerba Mate.
Really? That’s is all news to me. Why?
That’s because hibiscus tea benefits are so numerous but ultimately, it’s the large amount of antioxidants found in the beverage.
Hibiscus is very beneficial for releasing hyper tension, reducing blood pressure, weight loss, combating depression and lowering the compounds that form kidney stones.
Pregnant women should never drink hibiscus drinks because it could prematurely put them into labour.
This weeks drink combination includes hibiscus, lemon and honey to help calm your system when you are getting over a flu or cold. The honey aids as a cough suppressant and the lemon and hibiscus gives your body a big boost of vitamin C.
This flavor combination is quite tart like cranberry but very refreshing.
I actually really enjoyed it since lemonade is my favorite water kefir recipe.
Where can you buy hibiscus?
Typically health based stores carry it or you can find it in the herbal tea section of any grocery store. You can tear the teabag open and add the leaves to your water kefir recipe or you can purchase the flowers very reasonably online at Organic Matters.

WATER KEFIR SODA RECIPE
Make the first ferment and leave the jar in a warm place for 24-48 hours.
Strain the grains and add the following to your second ferment.
20 hibiscus petals
1/4 cup lemon juice
1 tbsp honey
Seal up the green swivel top bottle and leave it in a warm place for 24 hours for the second ferment.
Open slowly, strain and enjoy!
Refrigerate immediately and it can last there for up to 8 weeks before it turns to vinegar.
