Beets and blackberries both help to boost our energy. This combination, with the added benefits of ginger and raw honey, will help to give you the energy boost you need in the morning.
Ingredients

1/2 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)

1/4 cup raw (shredded) or steamed beets

4 leaves fresh basil

1 teaspoon grated ginger

1 teaspoon raw honey

Optional: 3 T presoaked chia seeds

Glass jar, nylon strainer, wooden spoon

Directions
Make the first ferment and leave the jar in a warm place for 24-48 hours.
Strain the grains, and measure out 1 cup of first ferment for the smoothie recipe. First ferment can be kept in the fridge for up to 14 days, or you can move on to the second ferment to flavour and carbonate it.
Add all ingredients into the blender cup, including ice for thickness.
Blend and enjoy!
Recipe Note
Chia seeds add fibre, omega 3’s, iron and protein. Add them at the end for a bubble tea-like texture.
Not a fan of beets, but want to incorporate their benefits into your diet? Raw beets can be described as earthy, but if the skin is removed and they are steamed, their sweetness becomes apparent. You can also purchase pure beet juice in the organic section of most grocery stores, which has a much more mild flavour while retaining its sweetness. Substitute fresh beet for 1-2 tablespoons of beet juice in your brews and smoothies.
