Some recipes are inspired by memories. Others come from the dishes that disappear first at every summer gathering.
My favourite potluck salad to bring on a hot summer day is a watermelon salad. It's crisp, refreshing, and somehow manages to disappear before anything else on the table. Without fail, someone asks for the recipe. The combination of sweet watermelon, fragrant basil, fresh mint, and a pinch of salt just works. After making it for so many summers, I couldn't help but wonder what those same flavours would taste like in a sparkling water kefir soda.
The answer? Summer in a glass.
This Watermelon Basil Mint Water Kefir Soda is everything I love about that salad, transformed into a naturally fizzy, probiotic-rich drink. Sweet, juicy watermelon provides a refreshing base, while basil adds a soft peppery note and mint brings an instant cooling finish. A couple of pinches of pink Himalayan salt tie everything together, enhancing the fruit's natural sweetness while contributing trace minerals and making this an especially satisfying drink after a hot afternoon outdoors.
Beyond its incredible flavour, this recipe is packed with ingredients your body will appreciate. Watermelon is over 90% water, making it wonderfully hydrating, while also providing vitamin C, vitamin A, and lycopene (the powerful antioxidant responsible for its vibrant red colour). Fresh herbs contribute their own beneficial plant compounds, and the live probiotics in water kefir help support a healthy gut microbiome with every refreshing sip.
One of my favourite things about making seasonal water kefir recipes is discovering new ways to enjoy fresh produce before summer slips away. When the farmers' markets are overflowing with ripe watermelon and fragrant herbs, there's no better time to turn them into something that not only tastes incredible but also supports your health.
Whether you're relaxing on the patio after work, filling a cooler for a picnic, or looking for a healthier alternative to sugary soft drinks, this Watermelon Basil Mint Water Kefir Soda is one you'll want to make again and again. Bright, herbaceous, naturally sparkling, and incredibly refreshing, it's a little reminder that some of the best summer recipes begin with the simplest ingredients.

Recipe Note
Watermelon is naturally hydrating and rich in vitamin C, vitamin A, and lycopene, a powerful antioxidant that gives it its beautiful red colour. Fresh basil and mint add bright, garden-fresh flavour along with beneficial plant compounds, while a pinch of pink Himalayan salt enhances the sweetness of the watermelon and complements its natural electrolytes.
For the freshest flavour, use ripe, seedless watermelon and fresh herbs. This recipe is best enjoyed well chilled on a warm summer day.
