Water Kefir Blueberry Dream Anti Inflammatory Smoothie

Blueberries are powerful antioxidants making them a wonderful ingredient to help with inflammation. Citrus fruits are the most common immune boosters, with high levels of vitamin C, and are key for fighting infections and viruses. Grapefruits, oranges, lemons and limes are all perfect for adding a delicious tangy brightness to water kefir. Nettles assist with swelling and inflammation of muscles and joints, especially with osteo and rheumatoid arthritis.

Water Kefir Blueberry Dream Anti Inflammatory Smoothie

MAKES: about 2.5 cups


1/4 cup frozen wild blueberries

1 cup (packed) lightly blanched young nettles (can sub spinach or kale if you don’t have nettle)

1 cup first ferment water kefir

1 tbsp fresh grated ginger

2 tbsp raw organic beet juice (or 2 tbsp of raw, finely shredded beets — the flavour is earthier and you will have some extra fibre in your smoothie)

1 teaspoon lemon juice

1 teaspoon raw honey or agave syrup

Optional: pinch of finely ground cayenne for extra inflammation fighting powerful


  • Make the first ferment and leave the jar in a warm place for 24-48 hours.
  • Strain the grains and add the ingredients to the blender with the first ferment water kefir.
  • Add ice and blend for 1-2 minutes, to ensure nettles or greens are broken down.
  • Enjoy!


If the smoothie is too thick after blending, add additional first ferment and blend again.

Be sure to use tongs or wear gloves when handling  fresh nettles to prevent stings.
