Not only does this water kefir smoothie help to reduce inflammation in your body, it also tastes like a dream. Blueberries are powerful antioxidants making them a wonderful ingredient to help with inflammation. Citrus fruits are the most common immune boosters, with high levels of vitamin C, and are key for fighting infections and viruses. Grapefruits, oranges, lemons and limes are all perfect for adding a delicious tangy brightness to water kefir.
Blueberry Dream Water Kefir Smoothie
1/4 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup (packed) lightly blanched young nettles (sub spinach or kale if you don’t have nettle)
1 cup first ferment water kefir
1 tbsp fresh grated ginger
2 tbsp raw organic beet juice (or 2 tbsp of raw, finely shredded beets the flavour is earthier and you will have some extra fibre in your smoothie)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon raw honey or agave syrup
Optional: pinch of finely ground cayenne for extra inflammation fighting powerful
- Make the first ferment and leave the jar in a warm place for 24-48 hours.
- Strain the grains, and measure out 1/2 cup of first ferment for the smoothie recipe. First ferment can be kept in the fridge for up to 14 days, or you can move on to the second ferment to flavour and carbonate it.
- Add all ingredients to a highspeed blender and blend until smooth.
- Pour into a glass, and enjoy!
NEED TO KNOW:
If the smoothie is too thick after blending, add additional first ferment and blend again.
Be sure to use tongs or wear gloves when handling fresh nettles to prevent stings.
