Hydration is key in hot weather, as well as a good balance of electrolytes to keep us healthy and energized. For those with chronic medical conditions, pregnancy or a sensitivity to heat, we all understand the perils of swelling and edema in warm summer months.

According to research, the live probiotics in water kefir not only reduce stomach bloating, but can also help to reduce overall inflammation and water retention (edema). The live probiotics in water kefir also improve digestion. This means bodies with healthy gut flora have an easier time with absorption. Not only is this great for vitamins and nutrients in general, but also those that we need to stay hydrated and keep our electrolytes in balance. Thanks to water kefir, getting a healthy dose of live probiotics is easier than ever. Did you know that just 1-2 ounces of water kefir has the same amount of probiotics as an entire tub of yogurt?

Fermenting Coconut water is ultra easy!

Add 4 cups of pure coconut water to your brewing jar and stir in 1/4 cup Happy Gut water kefir grains. Place in a warm spot for 24 hours. The water kefir grains will eat up all of the natural sugars in the coconut water and produce a live probiotic, electrolyte rich, low sugar drink that can be added to smoothies or placed into a second ferment where flavoring is added and fizz is produced. Keep reading for delicious coconut water kefir recipes.

Other fruits and veg we love to help us hydrate: cucumber, spinach or lettuce, and strawberries all contain over 90% water, along with other incredible vitamins and minerals. Perfect additions to a summer smoothie!

Pro Tip:  Along with daily water kefir, drinking plenty of water, limiting high energy activities in direct heat, and taking heat breaks are all essential to avoid dehydration. If you are prone to swollen limbs in the heat, staying cool, and keeping those extremities elevated will also help reduce symptoms.
